Winter Style Secrets

Whilst winter evokes thoughts of loungewear, hoodies and cosy nights in, you are sure to need to step out at some point. Take that cosy feeling with you and curate your fit for warmth and comfort whilst showcasing your personal style. Here are some secrets to remain in style, no matter how cold it gets.

  • Layer Smartly! This could be a lightweight outfit, covered with one warm layer, or multiple layers which can be adapted to changing conditions.
  • Accessorize: Winter is the perfect showcase for stylish headwear, scarves and gloves. Show off your personal style with different textures, fabrics and a daring pop of color.
  • Prioritize quality: Warmth and comfort is worth investing in! Choose soft cosy fabric, and chunky oversized details. Down provides warmth without adding weight and bulk.
  • Keep your feet dry! Seek out good quality waterproof footwear with insulated lining.
  • Invest in statement outerwear – your coat is the centerpiece of your winter wardrobe and the one you will wear the most often.

Big Coat Season

October is the perfect month to invest in a coat because you’ll be able to wear it straight away. It’s also fun to shop for a winter coat, because it’s one item that everyone really notices. You’ll also probably wear it more than everything else so it really needs to upgrade your wardrobe. Whilst a winter coat may cost a little more than other wardrobe essentials, if you consider the ‘cost per wear’ ratio we are sure you will agree that this is one item that it’s really worth investing in!

With so many options out there, where do you start and how many winter coats do you need? Nobody wants the environmental guilt of a wardrobe bursting at the seams (perhaps when you don’t even know what’s in it!). Also when you’ve chosen something you love you want to wear it every day right? So the first thing you need to consider is your lifestyle and what part of that lifestyle the coat is for.

How Many Winter Coats do I Need?

We’ve been doing some research and the answers range from a minimalist wardrobe of 3 coats, to a storage bursting 10! So lets take a look at some of the options, and how you decide whether you need it or not:

  1. The Wool Overcoat or Peacoat – a winter classic that works for all ages and never really goes out of style. A must have for anyone who wears a suit to work, or favors a more formal look.
  2. A Leather or Suede Bomber – a significant investment, but ultimately a super versatile coat which gets better and better with time. Leather also has the benefit of being naturally water resistant and windproof. This one can be dressed up or dressed down.
  3. The Parka – this is the true ‘big coat’. Usually padded or filled with soft down, and delivering that overside look that is perfect for layering. Perfect for elevating a casual outfit, and adding a pop of color and interest if you choose something with a fur hood or other trims.
  4. A Technical Coat – if you favor the outdoors in all weather then something with a good waterproof and breathability rating along with taped seams is a must. Choose a well regarded specialist retailer for this.
  5. The Puffa Jacket – these come in many shapes and weights, from the very lightweight under layer or cool summer day option, to a knee length oversized style. We recommend feather and down here for a lightweight but ‘full’ appearance and the benefit of warmth that our feathered friends enjoy!
  6. The Bomber Jacket- a true fashion piece. With this one, we wonder how you’d stop at one, with all the different opinions available from the iconic varsity style to a classic lightweight cotton, or a fully padded puffa style. Choose something oversized or with a drop shoulder to elevate a streetwear look, or a more fitted lightweight option for smart/casual nights on the town.
  7. The Wax Jacket – made famous by Barbour, this is probably the epitome of British country style. If your leisure pursuits include shooting or enjoying a country gastro pub, you’ll need to add this onto the list. Quality is important here, with the right care you could form a long term relationship with this iconic style.
  8. Denim – definitely not one for rainy days! However, the classic western jacket isn’t going anywhere soon. Denim is so versatile, so If you want to stand out from the crowd, choose a styled up version, with thoughtful branding.
  9. The Gilet – Often overlooked until you’ve tried one, but this clever piece bridges all seasons and layers brilliantly. Our favourite gilets are chunky but lightweight.

Perverse Demand is all about casual cozy style, our high quality outerwear is designed for warmth and comfort. We’ve added cosy sherpa and teddy fleece linings to our big coats and gilets, and filled them with lots of feather and down for a striking oversized streetwear look.
