First and foremost, streetwear is a sustainable alternative to fast-fashion, and as the world becomes more environmentally conscious than ever before, the demand for slow-fashion is on the rise.    

Unlike fast-fashion, which sees an overproduction and overconsumption of cheap clothes creating tons of waste pollution, slow-fashion aims to respect people, animals and the environment within its supply chain, from material to sale and delivery. 

Did you know that the fast fashion industry is one of the largest global polluters? Textile production and consumption generate more than 8% of all carbon emissions each year, and if this trend continues, carbon emissions will rise by more than 50% by 2030, significantly contributing to global warming and climate change. 

2. It’s High Quality 

Another key reason streetwear is so popular is because it is consciously built to last, with special care taken to separate it from other clothes on the market (e.g. fast-fashion brands). 

Although typically more expensive, streetwear brands use high-grade, premium materials, resulting in long-lasting garments you can wear for years and years to come. The value-for-money of streetwear is simply unmatched.

3. It’s Comfortable & Versatile

Streetwear has a strong overlap with sportswear and athleisure, making it extremely comfortable and able to be worn in all sorts of situations and activities, whether you’re going to lectures, grabbing a coffee or having a skate at the park. 

Streetwear is all about incorporating comfortable yet trendy clothing such as graphic tees, hoodies, tracksuits, and trainers. What’s more, as time has gone on, streetwear has become looser, more oversized and simply comfier.

4. It’s Part of the Celebrity/Influencer/Social Media Culture 

One of the main catalysts for the increased popularity of streetwear can be put down to the influence of celebrities, models and social media.

Streetwear really took off in the 1990’s after it was made popular by stars such as P. Diddy and Notorious B.I.G. In the 2000s, streetwear became part of mainstream consciousness, with the likes of Kanye West and Virgil Abloh merging street style with extravagance to create garments which had mass appeal yet remained cool and unique. 

Nowadays, celebrities are ditching their everyday glamourous looks in favour of premium yet casual streetwear, with reality-tv sensation Kim Kardashian being a great example of this. In fact, some argue that streetwear wouldn’t be where it is right now if celebrities had not adopted this unique style.

Fashion is heavily influenced by what people see on social media, and models and influencers are often known to be the ones to set the bar when it comes to what’s “on-trend” and “in-fashion”. This is the top reason why someone would decide to get that edgy oversized hoodie they saw on their favourite influencer or celebrity.

5. It’s Unisex

Another reason this fashion style is so popular, is that it’s typically considered ‘unisex’, i.e. a style that can be enjoyed by both men and women. While streetwear women’s outfits might come in smaller sizes than men’s, a girl styling streetwear can still choose to buy her outfits in men’s streetwear sizes, especially if she’s looking for an oversized look. 

6. It’s Scarce 

Streetwear is all about “limited-edition” items and “exclusive drops”, making highly demanded items seem more fashionable and popular. When a drop is sold out, it’s labelled as successful and exclusive because it leverages on scarcity and creates high demand.

7. It Allows You to Create a Unique Style

Last but certainly not least, streetwear allows you to find yourself and showcase your inner unique style through garments that promote a sense of individuality and creative expression.
